Abstract

As analyst instructors of the Sociedade Psicanalítica de Porto Alegre (SPPA), the authors of this article have been in dialogue with colleagues about the persistent increase in the number of candidates who do not complete the requirements to receive the title of psychoanalyst and become members of SPPA. Failure to complete the training results in a stagnation in the growth of the ranks of associate members and, consequently, of full members. This scenario is of concern because it could cause future difficulties both from an administrative point of view and for the transmission of psychoanalysis. With the aim of understanding the motivations that condition this scenario, and with the support of the Teaching Committee of SPPA’s Instituto de Psicanálise, the authors conducted interviews with all candidates with more than five years of completion of the tripartite training in psychoanalysis: analysis with the candidate, theoretical seminars, and supervision. Seventy candidates were interviewed between 2018 and 2019. As a result, there was a significant increase in the number of works presented to obtain the title of psychoanalyst. Furthermore, the favorable atmosphere that emerged from the interviews generated an increase in the number of associate members who met the requirements to become full members.
