“Freud (1895) começou a discutir a técnica psicoterapêutica muito cedo, nos casos clínicos dos Estudos sobre histeria. Bem mais tarde, já idoso, Freud (1937a; 1937b) ainda escreveu sobre o tema” (Gay, 1988, p. 274). Ele passou por três distintas fases ao se defrontar com a questão da técnica psicanalítica. Na primeira, ele era dotado de um estilo autoritário (vide o caso Dora) e de uma confiança quase arrogante em seus poderes curativos (por exemplo, teria curado Katharina em uma única sessão).
