The broad spectrum of contemporary masculinities

This article addresses the broad spectrum of contemporary masculinities, considering the complexity of the psychic processes involved in their constitution and the sociocultural transformations that challenge the traditional models of the masculine. By drawing on the contributions of Freud, Ferenczi, Stoller, and Greenson, the identificatory processes and the primitive experiences in the constitution of masculinity are examined. In dialogue with Michael J. Diamond, emphasis is placed on the importance of integrating maternal heritage, recognizing vulnerability, and object dependence for the development of a more flexible and less defensive masculinity. Discussions also touch the possibilities of transformation of male identity throughout life, especially in parenthood, middle age, and old age. Contemporary masculinity is understood as a dynamic and plural construction marked by conflicts, uncertainties, and possibilities for maturing.
