Building a place of existence within oneself and in the world:
the placement model as a basis for other fittings

This article addresses the clinical model of placement, little known because it was initially conceived by Winnicott in the very particular context of shelter situations during the Second World War. Considering this model in a broader sense – as an offer of a lasting experience of stability and continuity, which allows children with serious family problems to construct a place of somatopsychic and worldly existence – we will take it and explore it as the basis for Cris's treatment. In presenting the case in question, marked by intense turbulence, threat of discontinuity, and aggressiveness, we will address both the aspect of the physical and primordial place of dwelling that constitutes placement, and the symbolic place of existence that equally constitutes it and refers to the Oedipal problem. Furthermore, we will seek to show how, anchored in this basis, Cris's treatment advances towards the possibility of thinking (as opposed to acting), discrimination (as opposed to confusion and undifferentiation), and integration (versus dispersion).
