Avatars as transitional objects:
sexual identity explorations in digital environments

This article investigates how digital avatars function as transitional objects in the exploration of sexual identity among adolescents. Through the clinical case of Lucas – who experienced a non-binary identity via Luna, a female avatar in on-line games – it demonstrates how digital spaces operate as Winnicottian intermediate areas. Articulating Winnicott, Ogden, Bion, Rotenberg and Gherovici, the study reveals that Luna functioned as a protected identity laboratory, preceding off-line transformations culminating in self-discovery as Alex, a non-binary person. The analysis shows that, although the avatar facilitates projective identifications and experimentations, deep psychic transformation depends on containing human relationships – validating on-line community and, fundamentally, metabolizing analytic work. The article concludes that avatars, when analytically sustained, catalyze genuine identity transformations, demanding revision of virtual/real assumptions without compromising metapsychological rigor.
