Transformations of trauma

This text addresses the possibilities of transforming traumatic experiences. To this end, the author proposes the need for the analyst to understand whether they are dealing with a primary or secondary trauma. To broaden the discussion, the author presents brief theoretical contributions from contemporary scholars on the topic as well as their distinct ways of identifying, naming, and working with trauma and its possibilities for transformation. The text raises several questions, including whether the transformation of trauma might begin in the analyst’s own mind/body, since understanding countertransference is essential for the analyst to identify patient’s level of trauma the patient’s trauma, perceive its transformation, thereby enabling them to work through the traumatic experience.
