How a girl´s psychosexuality can broaden the debate on female sexuality?

On asymmetries, the confusion of tongues, and the danger of a single story

Abstract

Based on the clinical case of a girl, the author describes the short circuits that asymmetry, the confusion of tongues, and single stories can create in the debate on female sexuality. She proposes that, both in working with patients and in developing theories about gender, the psychoanalytic method for reducing suffering and alleviating symptoms lies in enhancing translation (in Laplanche’s sense), decreasing the confusion of tongues (in Ferenczi’s sense), acknowledging responsibility, respecting the vulnerability that arises from asymmetries, and legitimizing the multiplicity of healthy, mature, and authentic feminines with which the subject may identify or which they may desire.
