Abstract

This article establishes basic concepts concerning gender identity and gender variability and, in addition to situating the reader within the defining aspects of the field of study, delineates gender variability in children and adolescents. In this reagard, psychoanalysis can and should contribute to the understanding of such concepts, since most of them are grounded in identity definitions and their nuances. The article further discusses the advances and setbacks in our country regarding standards and processes for the monitoring of this population. It establishes guiding principles for such care and addresses conservative positions that deny the existence and benefits of integrated and multidisciplinary monitoring, leading to intense suffering, social exclusion, and resulting psychopathologies concerning families, patients, and care team as a whole. It clarifies what is currently known about the subjetct, despite the possible questions remain today, and defends the ethical and scientific research conducted in Brazil by responsible centers. As a research in the field, the author concludes with a personal proposal advocating a revision of the stance of the Federal Council of Medicine of Brazil, as well as the effective return of Resolution 2,265/2019 and the revocation of Resolution 2,427/2025 issued by the Council itself.
