Abstract

In the field of mental health, the legitimization of sexual diversity has modified the labels with which traditional psychiatry sought to classify human beings. The boundaries have become less hermetic, and the notion of perversion is transforming. Until a few years ago, perversion was cataloged according to certain sexual behaviors. As Joyce McDougall points out, today we reserve the notion of perversion for rapists, whether of children or adults. Other human sexual behaviors, insofar as they occur between adults and with their consent, are part of the expression of human sexuality, without pathological implications. I propose not to consider sexuality as something immanent, but rather as a variable of the human being that is not apocalyptic, but rather dependent on each social moment. Just as jurisprudence always maintains a disconnect with customs, psychoanalysis seems apprehensive about approaching human sexuality from a contemporary perspective, clinging to established theory as if theory and subjectivity could be immutable.
