El concepto de confusión emocional de Bion es una combinación de dos de los principales temas ontológicos, fenomenológicos y epistemológicos que llamó nuestra atención, la "O" en desarrollo y las protoemociones como ese aspecto de nosotros mismos que se cruza con la "O". para mediar en ella. La confusión emocional es lo que Freud realmente tenía en mente cuando habló del ello como un “caldero hirviendo”. Las formulaciones de Bion sobre la agitación emocional, cuando se consideran en el contexto de su interfaz con la "O", constituyen la reelaboración más avanzada y profunda del inconsciente hasta la fecha.
