The importance of the mechanism of identification in Freud’s work

The author presents a critical review of the concept of identification in Freud’s work, where various modalities are described, indicating dynamic, topographic, and economic implications for mental functioning. From a metapsychological perspective, identification progressively assumes a central role in formulations of individual development. Drawing on works that understand identification as part of the organization and development of the human mind, the article explores how Freud, in investigating the intimate mechanism of identification, describes the mechanisms that Melanie (1923) would later refer to as introjective and projective identification. In conclusion, the author raises several questions on the topic.
